The Buck Institute for Age Research is recruiting an experienced, strategic professional to serve as Chief Administrative Operations Officer. Reporting to Dr. Brian Kennedy, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, the Chief Operations Officer will manage a $40-million plus budget and will be responsible for providing oversight of all Institute administrative functions. The COO will be responsible for ensuring effective operations in support of the organization’s mission and for participation in long-range strategic planning activities pertaining to the administrative support of scientific initiatives.
The COO will routinely collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer to ensure administrative resources promote the advancement of science at the Buck Institute. The COO will manage all administrative functions through those Department Vice President’s and Directors reporting to him/her, with responsibility for Finance, Grants, Compliance, Business Development/IP, Facilities and Planning, Human Resources, and Information Technology.
BACKGROUND
Founded in 1999, the Buck Institute is the nation’s first and only nonprofit, independent biomedical research institute that is focused solely on aging research, and since its very planning and inception has been devoted to interdisciplinary research. The Buck Institute seeks to understand both the natural human aging process and how this process gives rise to a number of life-threatening diseases that have eluded effective treatment. Through their work, Buck scientists are laying the critical groundwork for the development of new diagnostic tests and treatments to prevent, delay, and treat the devastating disorders for which aging is the most common risk factor.
Key areas of study include: the molecular and chemical biology of aging and age-related diseases; mitochondrial dysfunction; the role and mitigation of cell death; regenerative medicine and stem cell approaches to disease; and the use of computers to enable next generation biomedical research. The Institute’s research encompasses age-related diseases including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, other neurodegenerative diseases, and stroke as well as breast cancer and other cancers. It should be noted that all research at the Institute is guided by the principal of “health span.” That is, the ultimate goal is not just increasing the duration of life, but improving the duration of healthy, functional and productive life.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential duties and responsibilities of the COO are:
Strategic Planning and Budget. Participate in strategic planning with the CEO and other Senior Staff in addressing issues related to all aspects of operations. Provide direction on long range planning and operational strategy, ensuring that programs support and are consistent with the mission, culture and goals of the Buck Institute.
Coordination of team of Directors. Guide strategic direction of operational team. Provide leadership and direction to achieve high performance standards and assist in operational collaboration and prioritizing of work projects as they relate to the Institute’s mission.
Fiscal and Operational Management. Exercise definitive responsibility for alignment of Buck Institute fiscal and operational goals with Institute strategic direction, ensuring effective and appropriate stewardship and development of Institute funding. Promote a management culture with a sense of personal accountability, cooperation, responsibility and problem-solving to enable scientific progress. Focus on removing barriers to progress, and instilling a strong sense of flexible and supportive customer service. Establish responsible development of Buck Institute policies and procedures and ensure Institute-wide understanding of and compliance with them.
Community Relations. Represent the Buck Institute via membership in local business, academic and community organizations, working to foster a positive public image in the community at the local, state and as appropriate National level.
QUALIFICATIONS
• A proven track record over ten to fifteen years culminating in a senior administrative executive role for a leading research enterprise with an annual budget in the $30-50 million plus range. The successful candidate will have held positions of increased responsibility with the related work experience necessary to gain a broad knowledge base for the key functions supporting a complex, research-oriented enterprise.
• Base of strong financial acumen demonstrated in expertise in financial analysis, as well as financial and management reporting.
• Experience in strategic planning, organizational design, change management, project/program evaluation, project administration, policy formulation, and complex problem solving.
• Excellent managerial and leadership skills, with a bias toward simple, effective solutions.
• Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to and experience in customer service, negotiation, and conflict resolution in an environment where legitimate demands often compete.
• Demonstrated problem-solving acumen and highly-responsive customer service mentality.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization as well as with external constituencies and vendors.
• Superior analytical skills to successfully manage projects, resources, and renovations.
• Ability to effectively work with people of different cultures and build consensus.

Postdoctoral Research Training Program at the Buck Institute -
a tri-lateral partnership with
Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and University of California, Berkeley
The current and future increase in the aged population will require expanded research for understanding the underlying mechanisms responsible for age-related diseases and aging. It is, therefore, important to train young scientists in modern research disciplines that will promote future excellence in scientific research that will enhance development of novel therapeutics to improve health in the aging population. Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms responsible for development of age-related diseases and aging requires knowledge and experience in the design of optimum research strategies that utilize state-of-the-art, integrated approaches that combine functional genomics, proteomics, molecular structure, and microanatomy in appropriate cellular or animal models. For this reason, the goal of this training program will be to provide postdoctoral fellows with advanced research training to uncover key mechanisms involved in age-related diseases and aging.
The proposed training for fellows at the Buck Institute for Age Research, Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and University of California, Berkeley provides unique faculty expertise in age-related diseases and aging, and superb facilities for training in genomics, proteomics, and morphology and cellular imaging, and model organisms for analyses of regulatory components in aging and age-related diseases. Notably, scientific research in the post-genomic era must now utilize the genetic information to the fullest extent to elucidate biochemical pathways involved in health and disease processes during aging.
Trainees will gain knowledge in research design that will provide inference into similar mechanisms for aging and age-related diseases, notably neurodegenerative diseases, stroke, cancer, and others. Trainees will gain skills in critical thinking to evaluate new research findings for applications oriented towards improving health in aging. In addition, trainees will receive instruction in written and verbal skills that enrich their publications, grant proposals, and oral presentations. Ongoing seminar series, basic science and clinical lectures, well-organized journal clubs, and research meetings will provide up-to-date information and intellectual cross-fertilization. Fellows of this program will gain state-of the-art research training that will promote the development of future scientists to solve biomedical problems that can lead to improvements in health and disease of the aging population.
